College & University Placement Exam

Many colleges and universities require students to take placement exams to determine the level of English and/or math a student will take at the college level.  If a student does not score well, this could require a student to take classes at the college level that will not count toward his/her college degree.  This is referred to in the college world as remediation.  This costs money and time and statistics show that when students have to "remediate" they are less likely to finish their intended degrees.

We recommend students contact the college/university of their choice to determine which placement exam is being used.  Lewis and Clark Community College still administers a placement exam in some situations.  They also consider the student's transcript and ACT/SAT scores.  (9th grade students will have to take the Accuplacer Next Gen Reading test to qualify for dual credit.)  As always, good subject scores on a student's ACT/SAT can eliminate the need to take a placement exam altogether.

We have included a link below for some free practice tests for the Accuplacer.  A little preparation can go a long way!

You can also use the Accuplacer Study App to take sample tests or “learn as you go!”  With the “learn as you go” feature, you will receive feedback and explanations on incorrect answers.  The sample tests resemble the test-taking experience (be sure to select “Next-Generation Practice Tests”).  This app only requires an email address to sign up, and is a great way to prepare for your College Placement Test! Just make sure you practice the appropriate test for your course.
