Career Exploration Opportunities at CMHS
Career exploration is a necessary but daunting process. At CMHS, we offer several opportunities for students to begin the process of identifying possible future career paths.
For motivated students, and for students who are eager to get started on the career exploration process, Lewis and Clark Community College offers a free online Career Coach. To access this awesome tool, go to Career Coach. This site allows students to investigate careers and requirements as well as current salary and job outlook for the St. Louis Metropolitan area. If you have questions about the online Career Coach, please see your CMHS School Counselor for help!
Students are also given the opportunity to take the ASVAB Test (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery), which contains an excellent career assessment and resource guide. Any high school student can participate in the ASVAB; however, for military entrance purposes, a student must be at least 17 years of age for the score to be official.
We also offer a course at CMHS called Career Development (CDEV 130). CDEV is open to students at the junior and senior level. This elective course allows students to walk through the career exploration process with a certified career teacher.
The University of Illinois also provides a great resource which can be found under the "Pick a College major" link. The more work one does up front, the better informed decisions will be. Take advantage of all of these wonderful resources. Consistency in results is a pretty good indicator that you are on the right track!
The last link below is a government resource. In their own words, "The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) is a career resource offering information on the hundreds of occupations that provide most of jobs in the United States. Each occupational profile describes the typical duties performed by the occupation, the work environment of that occupation, the typical education and training needed to enter the occupation, the median pay for workers in the occupation, and the job outlook over the coming decade for that occupation."
